What should I do when I leave school?

One of the major challenges you face as a teenager is the choice of the right career path. You might be confused thinking, “I just don’t know what to do when I leave school!” There are plenty of adults that still cannot answer that question.

Most teens rarely believe in themselves and as a result find it difficult to figure out the career path to follow. However, the early teen years still remains the best time to start exploring the available career options. It is never too early. You do not have to wait till you are older and everything appears clearer before you can choose the right career. The best time is now!

Another major challenge that teens face is choosing their career path based on what someone else wants for them. There are so many people that could have ideas for you but the most common are your parents or guardian. Most parents tend to have their kids career path already planned out for them based on their values and dreams. This is not supposed to be so. However, parents love their kids and think that they always know what is best for them. 

It is very important that YOU choose a career that is what YOU enjoy doing. The world is changing rapidly and many common jobs are disappearing. Now is the first time in history that passions can be turned into successful careers with the use of the internet and age and experience is no longer the determining factor to how much money you can make.

What are your major interests in life?
Everybody has something he or she enjoys doing. Find out yours and write them down. Write down the subjects that you enjoy studying in school. What do you enjoy in your spare time? If money and fear was no object to stand in your way – what would you do with your time?

Identify your strengths
What are things you are good at? What are the things that come naturally to you? You might naturally be a good runner, a good listener, good at art. Coupling what your strengths are to the things that you love or are passionate about can help you down the right path of finding the career for you. 

Temperament
Your personality is another important thing to consider in making the right choice of your career. Find out the environment that will suit your temperament and personality and channel your career pursuit to it. Do you like being around lots of people? Less people? Do you like to be outside more or being inside?

Passion and Beliefs

Certain things you have strong beliefs in are indicators that you have a problem to solve there. For instance, if you believe that animals need more help and are passionate to make a difference; it is an indicator that you are likely going to study a cause related to this. 

Once you have discovered your passion, pursue it with everything you have and with all determination. 

Finally, always remember to dream big and follow your heart irrespective of what your parents and friends think of your choice of career.
